Basil passed rego today!!!!!!!!!! YAY!! He has 4 new (not re-tread) tyres, a reconditioned steering box (it is such a better ride now!), new seat belts, and the engine cleaned up a bit. Also new accelorator + brake cables, and a few other bits and pieces.

Now that we can get the rego transfered to us we will look at getting an engine tune up and other things done (like interior paint etc etc... over time though :P )
I cant believe how much better he is already!

Awesome!

Where did you get the steering box reconditioned? Mine needs some TLC.

We bought the reconditioned steering box we didnt get basil's reconditioned. We just bought one which has been all steam cleaned and fixed up from a VW shop in Melbourne ( I think).

Tonight we bought Basil a nice fancy new CD/mp3 player - very fancy compared with the AM radio :D It has a colourful screen and everything (which of course is the most important part :D ) Tomorrow afternoon we will give it a go installing it.... wish us luck!!
We have speakers but we are unsure whether or not to install them yet... depends if we get the interior door panels redone in a different colour to match his paint when it gets done. Purple and brown wouldnt look THAAAT bad :) - though that might be just because I want him to have a decent stereo system in for the cruise :P

But of course, you won't have the stereo pumped up that loud on the cruise, will you? When you're in a convoy of great cars and you're taking in the sights, talking with passengers, having people wave at you, etc the last thing you need is heavy concentration on the coloured radio screen and fiddling to get the next song sounding good!

Hmmm, then again, I'll have no music in my ride, I'd better drive behind you....

Well since the stereo went in, we have installed:

-A 10" sub
- New steering wheel
- has been "redecorated" in a hippy theme until such time that we find an available spray-painter
- new running boards
- new headlights

Plus: We have purchased new honda prelude seats to install, extractors, a 009 dizzy, all new rubbers ready to install when painted, retractable seatbelts replacing the newish lap-sash ones we had...

Thanks Bruce for the photo (I think its yours anyway :) )

I have narrowed my paint choices down to two. All we need now is to find a spraypainter who is available - we are struggling - and to find someone to fit the seats for us.

Basil also won an encouragement award at this years autofest!! :)
Hope you liked the update anyway :)

Have been having some fun in the VW shops in Sydney. Amazing who you bump into aswell! Saw Mark today, getting up to mischief just like us

We managed to purchase pretty much all the things we need to redo Basil's interior ourselves to save on money( such as doorcards, rooflining, carpet, trunk liner and parcel shelf), and also some things we probably dont need but wanted anyway

My favourite purchase of the trip would have to be brand new pop-out rear windows, which I have wanted to install for a long time.

Also bought a few smallish things such as new indicato/ turn signal switch, tail-lights (smoked), replacement vents, a deck-lid lock, gear-stick nob (wood grain, to match our new steering wheel!), stainless steel window winders, stone-chip guards, fuel cap etc etc.

Also during our stay we have organised to have Basil's suspension upgraded and reworked, to allow for better wheels and road ride.

Thats about it for now - does anybody have experience installing the pre-made headliner, it looks as though its a bit difficult.

:D

Holy cr@p! You guys went nuts! The boys in the shops must've loved you.

I rate the pop out windows highly! I don't care if they're practical or not, they look super cool. 8)

One of the guys on this forum: rslt (Russel) has done it often, he should be able to give you good advice. He's the guy that restored the metallic green bug which Andre recently sold.

Oooh, suspension work 8)

Very keen to hear what you had done and what the ride is like...
