Getting ready for paint, inspecting rust etc.... poor Basil looks naked without his flowers :( but will look very handsome soon :D
You can see the struts installed more easily in these photos... old wheels on for painting so new ones dont get damaged.

If you are wondering why the 'focus' on driver's side front - well we have discovered that at some time in Basil's distant past, he has had an altercation with something ( or someone!!) and the repairs have been described as "makeshift" at best which made removing the front right guard something of a challenge! (Both front guards are to be replaced anyway) so twas nothing that cant be put right easily.. Just the joy of a resto -..always something waiting to surprise you!!

I got insurance organised today. It has been extremely difficult to find anyone to insure me because I am under 25. I feel sorry for males my age trying to get insurance - the one I finally found ads $300 simply because they are male

I tried shannons - "No, under no circumstances will we insure under 25 years of age. We are cracking down on this rule now."

I tried justcars - Sure we will insure your car, but you will be paying close to $2000 a year, plus a $500 excess, for us to insure your car for $3000.

I tried NRMA - fairly reasonable but comprehensive would still have cost me close to $1500 which is just too much. Said, ok how about 3rd party fire and theft - "oh no, we dont do fire and theft"

I tried AAMI. Initially they said they would not insure me because the car has been modified. But after some discussions we talked them around, I mean the car isnt a hoon machine now, the modifications are increasing safety!

So, I can get very reasonable 3rd party fire and theft on Basil through AAMI now, and I can choose to keep him in a write-off situation.

All bases covered :)

Now I just want him home :D I know it will be worth it 8)

Did you try putting the insurance under your fathers name and having you as a listed driver.

Just a thought.

Yes we did try that, Shannons refused and the others would only comprehensively insure for $3000 total value, even in dads name, which is far too low. So there was no point doing that unfortunatley.

I'm insured through Shannons. Full comprehensive for any value that I tell them (i'm covered for 13k). And that's with me telling them about every modification on there, even the suicide doors.
They also insure my daily driver Toyota for 3rd party property. If I total the VW I get to keep the wreck and get the cash too.

It costs me $240 a year.

:D

timmyj, are you an old bastard  . Sorry, dont mean to offend but I have never heard of insurance that cheap ever for for comprehensive.

By the way, I am 41 and I would be rapt to be only paying that. My wife's 80 series landcruiser is insured for $10,800 and we just got the renewal papers and its just over $1000. I guess she did have a prang about a year ago and I am in Sydney.

Looks like when my beetle is built, I will have to ring Shannons.

I went to Shannon's and got Fully Comp for less than $300 too - i found them very good - and as Tim said - you get the payout and get to keep the car (if anyhing bad should happen) :(
